Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, born on 15th September 1944 in Ntungamo, Uganda, is a veteran politician and military officer who has served as the President of Uganda since 1986. He studied Political Science at the University of Dar es Salaam, where he founded the University Students’ African Revolutionary Front and began his active involvement in national politics.
During his time at the university, Museveni established the Front for National Salvation (FRONASA), a liberation movement that played a key role, alongside the Tanzanian People’s Defence Forces, in overthrowing Idi Amin’s regime in April 1979.
In 1980, he contested for the presidency and later co-founded the National Resistance Movement (NRM) with former president Yusuf Lule. Under his leadership, Uganda has experienced significant political stability, economic growth, and infrastructure development. The economy has expanded nearly tenfold since 1986, with GDP per capita quadrupling. Improvements in healthcare and education have led to longer life expectancy, reduced child mortality, and free primary education for all children.
Museveni is recognized for his strong convictions, risk-taking spirit, and results-oriented approach to leadership. His tenure has been marked by the restoration of peace and security across the country and in relations with neighbouring states. Uganda is now widely regarded as a beacon of stability in the region.
Away from politics, President Museveni is a family man, married to Janet Kataha Museveni, with whom he has children and grandchildren.
